Eye Exams for Aspen Hill and Surrounding Areas

The importance of annual eye exams goes well beyond just making sure your vision isn't blurry. “Eyes are a window to the body.” Here are many reasons why eye exams are important — and why you should have annual eye exams to safeguard your health and wellness.

Did you know that many people first learn they have serious health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even cancer from — yes, you guessed it — a routine eye exam.

Our eyes have been called "the window to our soul." It turns out, they also are often a very effective window to our overall health.

During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor can observe and evaluate the health and condition of the blood vessels in your retina, which are a good predictor of the health of blood vessels throughout your body. Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia all are visible by changes in the appearance of the retinal blood supply and blood vessels.

Annual eye exams are especially important for anyone with diabetes or who might be at risk for the disease (due to obesity, family history or other reasons). More than 30 million Americans with diabetes and another 84 million who have prediabetes are at risk for developing diabetic eye disease, the leading cause of blindness among adults. In its early stages, diabetic eye disease has no visible symptoms; only a comprehensive eye exam can detect signs of the disease so treatment can begin soon enough to prevent vision loss.

The Need for Regular Eye Exams

For some people, the only time they ever get their vision tested is when they're renewing their driver's license. But those brief, superficial checks don't count as genuine evaluations. For one thing, they can't tell you what kind of correction your vision might require. Even worse, they can't detect lurking diseases and disorders that might rob you of your eyesight entirely. Conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma may take years to make the presence obvious to you -- and by then, you may have already suffered some permanent vision loss.

The comprehensive eye exams at Eyeland Eye Care Centers are designed to catch these kinds of problems while they're still in their early stages, giving us time to implement treatment that can correct your vision and/or preserve your eyesight for many years to come. Scheduling such exams on a regular basis should therefore be an essential part of your eye care routine.

Comprehensive Evaluations from Our Eye Doctor Team

Our comprehensive evaluations follow somewhat different criteria for kids as opposed to adults. Pre-school children get three major pediatric eye exams aimed at identifying and correcting common challenges to normal visual development. Ideally, older kids and adults receive a comprehensive eye exam each year, especially if our eye doctor team is treating an eye condition or refractive error. Seniors aged 60 and over definitely need annual exams so we can catch age-specific issues such as macular degeneration.

In a typical exam, your optometrist will dilate your pupils to examine your retinas and optic nerves, in addition to viewing the front of the eye for lens or corneal diseases. We will also check how well your eyes function and measure your ability to see clearly as different distance levels. If you need corrective lenses or eye disease treatment, you can get that help right here.
