Common Eye Injuries

Our eyes are some of the most sensitive parts of our body since they are quite delicate.  Keeping your eyes in good condition requires a few basic preparations against the most common eye injuries that occur.  Eyeland Eye Care Centers by our optometrists in Silver Spring, MD can help you to repair, maintain, and rejuvenate your eyesight whenever you have a big problem or a small concern.

Small Objects Can Cause Eye Injury

A grain of sand is just two millimeters in length, meaning that it might be about the size as the period at the end of this sentence.  This small object can cause major eye injury, however, especially when it is not treated.  Often, our eyes will flush our grit and sand naturally by producing tears, but dry eyes or irritated eyes may be unable to remove small grains.  While your first instinct is to rub your eye, make certain you do not: touching your eye increases the contact and can spread damage over greater areas.

Eye Cuts and Punctures

A sharp or pointed object can do a great deal of damage to the eye, especially if it pierces through the eyelid.  Standard first aid, like pressure and bandages, are the exact opposite of what you want to do when your eye is cut.  Rather than try to touch the eye with a bandage, cover up the affected area; a paper cup can be enough to protect it from contact.  Do not try to wash out the wound, since this can cause infection.  An optometrist understands how best to treat an eye that has been cut or punctured and can prevent the loss of vision.

Chemical Burns

One of the worst eye emergencies is a chemical burn.  Whether you work in a laboratory or whether you simply are exposed to a toxic substance, chemicals in your eyes can have serious consequences.  Wash the eye thoroughly with water (but not soap) to remove as much of the contaminant as possible.  See a Silver Spring optometrist as soon as possible to get the burn addressed.

Eye Impacts

A black eye is common if you practice martial arts and can be treated with a simple cold compress.  A more severe eye impact requires professional help to make certain the skeletal and muscular system below the skin remains functional.  Come in to see one of our eye doctors to address it.
