Bluetech Lenses

BlueTech Lenses at Eyeland Eye Care in Rockville, MD

Many people would name blue as their favorite color, and the cheery sight of a bright blue sky is always a welcome one. But a certain portion of the blue light spectrum offers nothing to be happy about. This frequency range not only interferes with restful sleep, but it may also promote an irreversible disease called macular degeneration. The good news is that you can protect your eyes against this blue light with the BlueTech lenses available at Eyeland Eye Care in Rockville, MD.

What Is Blue Light, and Why Is It Bad for You?

Blue light is the frequency range extending from 310 to 500 nanometers; it is also called HEV (High Energy Visible) Light. This range, starting just beyond the UV range is where visible light begins, progressing from violet hues into the blue range. This range can cause serious problems for human health. The violet-tinged HEV frequencies are associated with the development of macular degeneration, a retinal disease that gradually destroys your ability to see in the center of your visual range. (UV exposure can also hasten the approach of this disease.) The turquoise-tinged portion of the HEV scale may interfere with the brain's production of melatonin, a neurotransmitter crucial for governing the sleep-wake cycle.

HEV exposure has always been a concern since ordinary daylight contains its fair share of HEV frequencies. But this worry has become magnified in recent years with the widespread adoption of LED screens in computer monitors, TVs, and mobile devices. Even though these devices produce much less HEV light that the sun itself, the close proximity of the devices to the eyes presents a very real danger.

Designer Eyeglasses That Filter Blue Light

Our eye doctor at Eyeland Eye Care Centers has the answer to your HEV worries: BlueTech lenses, a line of specialized lenses designed to filter varying amounts of blue light. These lenses use a special "recipe" of filtering agents collectively known as Blue Light Plus. Depending on how whether you're getting lenses for indoor or outdoor use, you can order BlueTech lenses that block anywhere from 41 percent all the way up to 99 percent of blue light. Our eye doctor can order these high-quality lenses to fit your exact prescription for designer eyeglasses.
